On February 22, 1959 the first Daytona 500 was run before a crowd of 41,000 fans. This 200 lap, 500 mile, race is held annually in Daytona Beach, Florida at the start of the NASCAR season. Widely regarded as the most important and prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar the Daytona 500 brought more popularity to the sport over the years granting it the title of "The Great American Race".
